IMHO series: Be a good Senior QA Engineer
Junior — Medior — Senior are a common 3 phases of QA engineer’s life.
In my previous company, I already experienced 3 phases of QA engineer’s life. In this article, I’m not trying to patronize anyone. Just how hard I’m trying to be a good Senior QA Engineer and what do I expect of myself.
Own the trick
There’s no one who doesn’t have problems. Even a Senior QA Engineer could also have a basic problems. But we should manage the problems with the trick we have based on our experience. If there is no experience, just don’t panic like a Junior does.
Stay simple
Be simple to be more powerful. No need to have a big picture of all of things. Knowing what the team needs on a daily basis will help in long-term development.
Know the right technology
2021, more tools to learn. Do we need to implement all of those tools? Each teams need different handling to grow. To know what is right, ask the team what they need from us or ask what problem that they have and we have to do is to find what is best to use together.
Code review power
Teach Junior — Medior about code best practice through code review is more useful rather than just teach about the theory.
Create more documentation
Create documentation not only for legacy but also to increase the knowledge of others with reading material.
Do more sharing session
This is a must. If we don’t have any confidence yet to share to external community consider to always create an internal sharing knowledge session. Don’t assume the things we know are already known by everyone, there are many small things that maybe many people don’t know. Always share what we know and don’t be discouraged.
Have more ideas
Based on experiences and problems we’ve met in the past, this should give us more ideas to improve current condition to be the best environment for many people.
Self improvement
Know what our shortcomings are and don’t wait for advice from anyone to be the best version of us. Just know what we should improve about ourselves without having to be asked by others.
