Mindset

Incorrect

  1. Automation is a code version of step by step of Manual testing.
  2. Automation is cool.
  3. Automation is to creates many scenarios run automatically.
  4. Automation can make me earn big salary.
  5. Automation is SOLUTION !

Correct

  1. Automation requires to implement Engineer best practices. The long steps of Manual testing cannot be implicitly implemented into Automation code.
  2. If we cannot make Automation helpful to Manual testing, we fail to make the Automation to be cool.
  3. There are many configuration to make Automation can run automatically, not just the scenarios that QA Engineer created. The framework itself, the CI / CD etc. If we don’t know any knowledge about that, we won’t know how to fix the real problem of our Automation failed run.
  4. Don’t imagine huge salary if we can’t improve our skills. All the big talks doesn’t work to specific managers who expect great actions.
  5. Hey, what do you expect? Automation can also be a disaster. Hire wrong QA Engineer, pay for expensive but not full support tools, doesn’t run effectively, only to impress stakeholders etc. JUST WAKE UP !!! Automation is exist to help repetitive Manual testing task. THAT’S IT. THAT’S ALL. Not to help support the prestige of certain people.

Mental

Should Not Have

  • Underestimate.
  • Waiting for someone to teach and correct our Automation code.
  • Lazy Googling.
  • Copy paste code (only).
  • Take orders.

Must Have

  • Curious.
  • Self learning.
  • Not afraid to fail.
  • Implement new things.
  • ATM (Amati Tiru Modifikasi) a.k.a Copy Paste Edit code.
  • Research and explore.

There are many mental issues with QA Engineer that we could try to improve. The main cause is because not many of us have an Open Minded and Growth Mindset behavior in our daily work activity.
